Chester Jermaine Jennings (born 3 June, 1973; Toledo, Ohio, USA), professionally known as Lyfe Jennings, is an American R&B and soul singer‑songwriter, record producer and multi‑instrumentalist. He plays guitar, bass and piano, integrating these instruments into his recordings and performances. The New York Times has referred to him as a “socially minded R&B singer”, reflecting recurring themes of reflection, accountability and perseverance in his songwriting.
Early Life
Jennings was raised in Toledo in a working‑class household and is the middle of five children. As a teenager, he performed in a local group with his brother and two cousins, gaining early experience in arranging vocals and stagecraft before the group disbanded in the early 1990s. Legal issues interrupted his youth and curtailed his musical progress during that period, after which he returned to writing and performance.
Career
Jennings released the album Lucid in October 2013, presenting self‑written material with live instrumentation and introspective narratives. Tree of Lyfe followed in June 2015, recorded primarily in his home studio and framed by his stated aim to deepen rather than “reinvent” his artistic voice. He subsequently issued the album 777 in 2019 and continued releasing standalone tracks, including “Money (That’s What I Want)” (2022), “Tell Me” (2024) and “Must Be Nice (A.O.U) (2024 Reboot), extending the lifecycle of his catalogue while maintaining his blend of confessional R&B and live instrumentation.
Current Activities
Jennings continues to write, record and perform, adding new material to digital platforms alongside his established repertoire, most recently via singles released in 2022 and 2024. At present, Lyfe Jennings remains active within his genre, with updates announced via official channels as confirmed.
